Global roaming can be expensive. Your mobile phone’s global roaming, that is, not yours. While Jim and Nancy are forgoing that coffee in Rome because it seems ridiculously expensive, their smartphone is busy living it up – and living up to only half of its name (being a phone, not being smart).

I am regularly told stories of horrific bills as a phone has happily spent its holiday hunting for the internet while Jim and Nancy have stomped around Europe enjoying themselves but conscious of their budget. (Yes, it’s as simple as turning off roaming, of course, but exactly where was that in the menu?)

Or as travellers receive calls to let them know that the cat is fine.

Home again and wham, bam, a $2000 phone bill, thank you very much.

There are ways around all of this.

Adventurous Opportunist aka Workamper.

Workamping:  Working or volunteering at a variety of jobs across the United States and Canada while living part or full time in a recreational vehicle; the ability to “enjoy America, one job at a time;” also, small business owners or independent contractors who conduct their business out of a recreational vehicle.

Most people aren’t familiar with the word “workamping” although it was coined in 1987 by Workamper News, Inc., which began as a newsletter out of Heber Springs, Arkansas.  The business has greatly expanded yet still operates out of Heber Springs.

When people first hear about Workamping opportunities, they often want to know “how do I find out more; or, ask “how do I get started?”

A great way for the adventurous opportunist or Workamper wannabe is to attend a Workamper Rendezvous. The next Rendezvous

As Christchurch starts to rebuild its city from quakes earlier this year, proposed height restrictions for buildings in the CBD could threaten the feasibility of new hotel developments.

The New Zealand Hotel council’s (NZHC) recent submission to the Christchurch City Council (CCC) raises its concerns reading the height restrictions.

NZHC Regional Chair Bruce Garrett said the hotel height restrictions will have an economic effect on the viability of future hotel projects as fewer rooms would be able to be accommodated on an average sized site.

Whilst NZHC congratulated the CCC on the delivery of the draft city plan, it also recognised that the proposed height limits, parking restrictions and issues around road front accessibility didn’t take into account the ways in which hotels operate.

“The special nature of hotel operations needs to be recognised, guests can’t be expected to walk with luggage or conference materials and hotels must be able to provide on-site car parking and have adequate set back from the road to eliminate any traffic congestion with tour coaches and passengers disembarking.” Mr Garrett said.

At the top of the list of priorities for NZHC is the construction of a new convention centre as it is the key to restoring business tourism and a “corridor of normality” in the city.

“Hotels based within the CBD need reassurance that once they reopen visitors will be able to come back into the city and that there will be activities for them to enjoy.”
