The Northern Ireland Select Committee has urged the Treasury to scrap APD on both medium- and short-haul flights from the region.
Its recommendation comes amid growing fears over the future of Northern Ireland’s only transatlantic route. Continental Airlines currently flies to New York from both Belfast and Dublin, but while APD on the service from Belfast is £60 per person, tax on flights from Dublin is just £3. Some travellers in Northern Ireland are now opting to flying from Dublin to avoid APD, and the committee suggested that Continental may pull out of Belfast within a year if the tax remains in place.
