Looking at what’s in store for cruisers in 2012, editors at Cruise Critic, the influential cruise news and reviews site, have compiled a list of what is — and what isn’t — likely to make waves in the next twelve months.

“We’re expecting to see changes — such as new smoking policies, which will extend the smoke-free areas of the ship, and increased onboard fees — which could have a profound effect on the cruise experience,” said Carolyn Spencer Brown, Cruise Critic editor in chief. “In terms of destinations, the Caribbean will remain a firm favorite for cruisers, and cruise lines continue to increase capacity in the region.

Carnival Cruise Lines is promising to take passengers to new dimensions on its soon-to-debut ship, Breeze.

The vessel will feature what the line calls a “Thrill 5D Theatre,” which is similar to motion-simulator productions found at major theme parks, aquariums and zoos.

The theater is built on a 3D projection system, which requires the audience to wear special glasses.

Amadeus has unveiled a new hotel package tool which it claims could save major companies up to $1.6 million per year on accommodation bookings.

The technology firm’s Hotel Optimisation Package is aimed at larger travel agencies and TMCs and includes the Hotel Dynamic Saver tool which Amadeus said could save 10% on total spending on hotels for major corporations.

The hotel saver tool includes last room availability and automatic comparison of negotiated rates against public rates to make sure buyers get the best price. A
