Tiger Australia posts full year loss

FRUSTRATION with Tiger Airways’ cancellations reached flashpoint with police called to the Sunshine Coast Airport to calm its angry passengers.

Virgin Blue staff raised the alarm when passengers reacted furiously to the news there would be no Tiger Airways flights out of Maroochydore because one of its planes was stranded in Melbourne.

Witnesses said a small group of passengers abused Tiger staff and police.

“There was a confrontation, a bit of commotion, but it didn’t really go any further,” an airport spokesman said.

Police made no arrests but returned later for a “walk through” to ensure there were no further problems.

Tiger Airways spokeswoman Vanessa Regan confirmed the budget airline was forced to cancel four flights yesterday and two in and out of Brisbane on Saturday because of aircraft needing “an engineer’s assessment”.

She said that when cancellations occurred, every effort was made to contact passengers before they reached the airport, but that wasn’t always possible.

“Disruptions occur with all airlines from time to time and Tiger works hard to keep them to a minimum,” Ms Regan said.

“On occasion, when disruptions occur, Tiger works hard to minimise the inconvenience by offering a range of provisions to assist passengers to get to where they are going.”

The airline’s own website shows two out of five flights were delayed or cancelled last month and in the past year, fewer than three out of four flights (73 per cent) were on time.
