AN Australian has been named “Travel Photographer of the Year” at the Sony World Photography Awards in London overnight.

Liz Loh-Taylor, from Melbourne, won the category with her series of pictures documenting a native tribe shot in Southern Ethiopia.

Loh-Taylor was one of 13 professional category winners presented with an award held at the ceremony at the Odeon in Leicester Square.

She described her winning series as an “ongoing personal project examining cultural change, starting in Africa, where traditions and beliefs that transcend time are now co-existing and converging with the modern world.”

Argentinean photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg was named overall Photographer of the Year winning a $US25,000 cash prize and Sony digital SLR equipment.

His series was a study of a community of islanders living in the Parana River Delta in Argentina.

All the winning images will be exhibited until May 22 at Somerset House in London.
