We all love Provence but I highly recommend The French Basque Country if you have never been. The French Basque country is back with a vengeance , and St-Jean-de-Luz, near the Spanish border, is the star of its revival. It is a really nice little town with a fine beach and it now has that essential anchor for any bourgeois seaside resort; a top-notch grand hotel. This Edwardian-vintage 52-room hotel gets it just right, from the reproduction Belle Epoque bathroom fixtures, it is really a treat to stay there if you can. Service at this hotel is great and welcoming and-best of all, the health club with a heated indoor pool has a view of the beach and if you go, get a room sea-facing. (the hotel occupies a narrow plot between the sea and the shore road, so anything less is definitely subject to traffic noise), so you are warned! . Also you can enjoy a nice breakfast or a light lunch at the hotel and by the way the food is totally fine but explore and trust this Franco-Spanish region to deliver spectacular meals.

When to go : The basque Country as well as Provence are two places that are wonderful during the months of April, May or September and October because they are crowd free and you can really enjoy an-off season vacation when you don’t have to stress out because your favorite restaurant is full or you cannot find parking, but also early spring and Fall are always the best time to go somewhere.
