If you love getting those Groupon e-mails offering big discounts on restaurant meals, spa services and fun activities, then definitely subscribe to Groupon Getaways with Expedia. Groupon has partnered with Expedia to provide deeply discounted hotel rates, airline tickets, cruises, car rentals and vacation packages. Just like you did with Groupon, simply select San Francisco and enter your e-mail to start receiving deals directly in your inbox.

Just like the regular Groupon deals, you receive a Groupon voucher when you purchase a Groupon Getaways with Expedia deal. The deal will list how to redeem your voucher, when you need to use it by and any other restrictions such as a minimum stay requirement or blackout dates. While I haven’t had the opportunity to purchase a Getaways deal, I did recently go on a trip to Chicago courtesy of two Groupon deals. For $7, they offered a $77 (thus saving me $70) voucher for a Virgin America flight between San Francisco International and Chicago O’Hare. Each person who purchased the deal received a promo code with which they could go on Virgin America’s website and proceed to book a ticket for travel before the specified deadline. Groupon charged me $7 while Virgin America charged the cost of the flight I selected less the $77 discount.

I then scored a stay at Hotel 71, located along the Chicago River right off the Magnificent Mile, for $99 a night for three nights over the weekend. A room at the Hotel 71, which had some of the most friendly hotel personnel I’ve run across, regularly costs around $200 a night on the weekends. My card was charged $297 by Groupon. I called Hotel 71 and made a reservation using my Groupon confirmation numbers. The only thing I had to pay for when my stay came to an end was the hotel tax (based on $99 a night).
