Stranded Tiger passengers to fly soon
TIGER Airways’ woes have continued for the second day in a row at one of the busiest times of the year.
As people flock to the airport for Easter long weekend getaways the airline has delayed seven of its flights for up to six hours.
Passengers bound for Sydney and Brisbane were yesterday forced to scramble for replacement flights when the discount airline cancelled two flights.
A 6am flight to Mackay has been pushed back to midday stranding a number of passengers and leaving them unsure if they will make it to their destination.
Caitlin Guilfoyle said she doesn’t think she will make it to Mackay in time to catch the last boat to Hamilton Island for the day at 5pm tonight.
“I was going to Mackay and I’m booked to stay at Hamilton Island,” she said.
“But the last ferry leaves at 5pm and I don’t think I’ll make it there for my one night on the island.”
Ms Guilfoyle said people were sleeping on the floor of the terminal after rushing to board the early morning flight.
Melbourne Airport has also listed six other Tiger Airways flights as delayed, including one to the Gold Coast which is expected to be more than five and a half hours late:
TT5542 to Maroochydore, due to take off at 7.35am is now estimated to take off at 9.30am;
TT5204 to Brisbane, due to take off at 10.55am is estimated to take off at 11.30am;
TT5502 to the Gold Coast has been delayed from 1.05pm to 6.40pm;
TT5504 to the Gold coast is estimated to take off thirty minutes behind schedule at 6.20pm;
TT5662 to Hobart, due to take off at 6.20pm is now expected to fly just before midnight;
TT5598 to Perth is estimated to take off 50 minutes after schedule at 11.35pm;
A small number of Virgin flights and one Etihad flight are also expecting delays of up to 40 minutes.
Tiger has also been forced to defend its commitment to passenger safety after it was revealed yesterday the airline had been given a “show cause” notice by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia.
The airline has not been sanctioned or had flights suspended by the safety authority, but the notice related to concerns of maintenance short cuts and a slackening in pilot training.
