Scarborough, Tobago – April, 2011 – Every year, on the Tuesday after Easter, the village of Buccoo on the island of Tobago prepares for the unique, high-spirited and highly competitive sport of goat racing. Billed as the highlight event during the Easter season, the fast track competition showcases jockeys racing alongside their charges in a quest to be declared the swiftest of them all. This year, in addition to expanding the sporting event to two days, April 25 and 26, the Tobago House of Assembly’s Division of Tourism and Transportation (THA) has taken the race to Facebook by launching the “Vote for your Goat” competition.

“Vote for Your Goat—How many Caribbean islands can ask their friends that? How many other places in the world have goat races? We have big fun here and want to share that fun with our viral and social network friends,” noted Director of Tourism Warren Solomon. “This is one of the many ways we hope to reach Tobago’s online tourism market, as the majority of travelers now research destinations and book tickets online.”

The application’s design allows Facebook fans to become virtual jockeys of the goats entered in this year’s races. Featuring full profiles of all the actual goats, including information on their handlers, interests, history and personalities, Vote for Your Goat also allows a “virtual jockey” to make an informed choice when determining which goat will be the champion.

To enter the online competition, followers of Tobago’s Facebook fan page must sign-up, select their four-legged athlete from a list of 20 competitors, and become a jockey. Once complete, “virtual riders” will have the option to invite friends to vote for their chosen goat. The jockey with the most “likes” will be declared the winner and receive a trip to Tobago inclusive of two tickets from any Caribbean Airlines gateway (courtesy the airline) and accommodations for four nights courtesy of the THA. The deadline for competition is May 4, 2011. To become a fan or Vote for Your Goat jockey, visit www.facebook.com/visittobago.
