In May, I challenged myself to try to do 40 things this summer from our annual Summer Fun guide. I thought 30 would be doable, but 40 would make things interesting, force me to try new things.

Last week, I did four things, bringing my total to 27.

First, my kids are in hockey camp mode, so we did some skating at both the St. Peters Rec-Plex (No. 24) and the Hardees Iceplex (No. 25). Details for both are on Page 14 of the guide.

On Sunday, I took the kids on an early-morning walk in Laumeier Sculpture Park, the 96-acre outdoor museum near Sunset Hills (No. 26, Page 38). They loved both the nature and the man-made designs. They got a kick out of Tony Tasset’s ‘Eye’ and begged to climb Jackie Ferrara’s pyramid-like ‘Laumeier Project.’ But they spent nearly an hour exploring Mary Miss’ ‘Pool Complex,’ which is an exhibit built around ruins of an old swimming pool. I thought this especially sweet because it’s where my husband proposed to me.

After, we went to the Museum of Transportation (my No. 27; page 39). I’m neither a “car” nor “train” person, and neither are my kids, but I found the exhibit of Hollywood cars fascinating and my kids loved being able to walk around inside old trains. It was so hot we skipped the mini train ride, but I remember it being tons of fun when the kids were younger.
