I just got back from a long weekend in Destin, Fla. (read about it July 31 in Home & Away). For the first time ever, I did not check a bag. This means, I had tons of questions and issues with packing just my carry-on suitcase and an overstuffed purse.
Here are some things I learned.
1. Airport rules require you to pack all liquids (must be 3.4 oz. or less) in a one-quart plastic baggie. That’s fine, unless you know you’ll need more than 3.4 oz. of something. In our case, we bought sunscreen once we got there.
2. Coordinate your outfits so you need only two pair of shoes: a going-out pair of heels and pair of day shoes. I used fancy flip-flops so they were good on the beach.
3. Think carefully about what you pack in your carry-on. The sand my sister wanted to bring home to her kids, for example, was held up for 10 minutes for a drug test.
4. If you buy souvenirs, make sure you have room for them. If not, consider shipping them home.
5. Consider bringing a space-saving storage bags. I used two for the way home so that it would squish down all my clothes and I’d have room for souvenirs.
